When the Pig Looks at the Matchbox

Short

20 min.
Director/Co-Writer: Norm Fassbender
Producer: Kate Holowach

Ever look at that guy waiting for the bus, muttering to himself, and wonder, “What’s going on in there?”? This innovative multi-split-screen short takes us inside the fractured/fevered brain of Jeff.

The visual world of the film reflects and refracts the un-peeling layers of the character’s mind – he speaks to himself from all over the screen, one thought literally freezing as another comes forth.

As memories and newspaper headlines flood his mind, he becomes every and anyone: an American actor ailing in Moscow; the peasant woman forcing a home-cure on him; the guilt-ridden brother of an accused killer; a marooned Russian cosmonaut; an obtuse theatre director; an Albertan hippie… will the real Jeff please stand up – please! As he searches for the meaning of “the matchbox”, we wonder… Is he sick, crazy or dangerous? This is an acting tour-de-force, and a lot of fun to watch.

One of a body of Norm’s work inspired by the live theatre scene in Edmonton, Alberta, the short is based on the Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival play, “Love Letters From the Unabomber”, by Jeff Page and Wes Borg. The adaptation was co-written by Norm Fassbender and Jeff Page. Plastic Thought digitalized the madness, and Dave Clarke created the soundscape.
