| Tornado Magnet is one in
a series of projects that sprang from the live theatre scene
in Edmonton. This comedy short, written by and starring Darrin
Hagen, is a glimpse into trailer park life from the woman's
point of view. Yes, we know Darrin’s a man. Shhhhh –
don’t tell him.
Dottie will let you know how things run in a trailer court
like how to gauge the new-comers, and who to avoid when they’re
looking to borrow Tupperware. She’s not at all shy about
letting you know how things run in her marriage, either. In
fact, not at all shy about sums up our Dottie. With the support
of Sharon, her best friend and neighbour, she manages the
kids, the finances, the trailer, the neighbourhood politics
and the continuing crises that get in the way of her well-laid
plans. Through her eyes, and the camera, the Wildrose mobile-home
park doesn’t look like such a shabby place to be.
This little slice of life comes with an authentic Alberta
pedigree – Darrin is no stranger to the trailer parks
of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. That’s him on the
accordion, as well. And the talents of two of the Three Dead
Trolls are evident, with Wes Borg in the editing and Joe Bird
in the mixing the music/sound.
Director of Photography Carl Bessai provided the folksy trailer
park images, and Dave Clarke sneaks in here as well with his
imaginative sound FXs.
